Article: ‘They are trusted,’ mayor says of Grand Rapids firm that’s one of nation’s fastest growing (MLive)

Fleis & VandenBrink had two employees and one office when it opened nearly 25 years ago. Today, it’s one of the fastest-growing architecture, engineering, planning and environmental consulting firms in North America.

F&V’s significant growth, based on a 3-year growth trend in gross revenue, both by percentage and raw dollar, is well-documented on the prestigious 2017 Zweig Group Hot Firm list. The Grand Rapids-based firm is 30th nationwide and No. 2 among those headquartered in Michigan.

“What I think of when I think of F&V is the fact that they are trusted,” said Jim Barnes, longtime mayor of Portland, where F&V has served as city engineer since the 1990s. “They won’t give you a self-serving opinion. If they don’t need to do engineering services they’ll tell you that, but at the same time they’re very reliable.

“They’re huge in terms of keeping their eyes open for (funding) opportunities, which is obviously good for them but it’s also good for us. They’ve been great community partners.”

The Zweig Group Hot Firm list recognizes the 100 fastest-growing firms in the United States and Canada. F&V ranked 70th in 2016. The firm will be honored at the Hot Firm and A/E Industry Awards Conference in September in Seattle.

F&V also has been named one of West Michigan’s 101 Best and Brightest Companies to Work For in the four of the last five years. An innovative surveying project along the Muskegon River earned the firm a 2017 Honorable Conceptor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan.

The recognition comes as F&V approaches 200 employees — a milestone that could be reached before the firm’s 25th anniversary in January 2018. The multi-disciplined civil engineering and architecture firm is continuing to grow and looking to fill several job openings.
