Fleis & VandenBrink (F&V), a full-service, multi-disciplined engineering and architecture firm, is proud to announce today that Larry J. Fleis, PE, the firm’s co-founder and former president, has received the 2020 ACEC/Michigan Felix A. Anderson Image Award.
The prestigious award was made March 7 at the American Council of Engineering Companies of Michigan (ACEC-MI) annual awards banquet in Grand Rapids.
The Felix A. Anderson Image Award is made to an outstanding individual who has contributed to enhancing the image of the engineering profession, been active in educating the public about the positive contributions of the engineering profession and demonstrated a commitment to improving the awareness of the engineer’s contributions to the “quality of life.”
“It’s an honor to be recognized by your peers. It doesn’t get any better,” Fleis said after receiving his award. “Thank you ACEC for this incredible and awesome honor. I’m humbled.”
Larry started F&V in 1993 with Steve Vanden Brink, a Grand Rapids civil engineer and friend. He served as president until 2017.
Under his leadership, the company has grown from a single Grand Rapids engineering firm to include construction management through F&V Construction (FVC) and operations of water and wastewater treatment facilities through F&V Operations and Resources Management (FVOP). Today, the firm has over 225 employees and nine offices in Michigan and Indiana.
Larry continues to serve as president and chairman of the board of directors of the parent company, F&V Companies, Inc., and president of FVC and FVOP. He has more than 40 years of experience in the civil engineering field, specializing in municipal engineering services and public project financing. Numerous communities have utilized his expertise as their Engineer of Record. He has also served as project manager for hundreds of design and construction projects throughout his career.
Larry has been an active member of ACEC and served as on the ACEC-Michigan Board of Directors for four years. He also served as chairman of its Rural Development taskforce and has served as chair of the Qualifications Based Selection Coalition for nine years.
“To me ACEC is not about individuals,” Fleis continued. “ACEC is an organization of many firms that have gotten together for a common goal. Together we have made things happen.
“I have worked with many of the firms here today and their key staff on ACEC boards and committees and it’s been my pleasure. It’s been good to work with you and develop professional relationships and sometimes friendships.”
An MSU graduate in civil engineering, Larry has also been a member and chairman of the MSU CEE Engineering Advisory Board. In 2019, he received the Civil and Environmental Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award from Michigan State University.
In the last decade, F&V has received numerous state and national awards, under Larry’s leadership. F&V was named “101 Best and Bright Companies to Work For” in West Michigan the last five years. F&V was also named “Best and Brightest Companies to Work For” in the Nation the last three years. Four times F&V was also recognized as a “Hot Firm,” as one of the top 100 growth engineering companies in the United States and Canada.
In the last decade, F&V has also been named “Firm of the Year” twice by ACEC-MI and has also received numerous design excellence awards including several first-place awards for both engineering and surveying.
