Local Residents Optimistic About Road Diet’s Success

Birmingham’s residents are finding that the West Maple Road restriping from four lanes to three is successfully decreasing speeds, lessening crashes and making their commute more enjoyable.

Following Complete Street and Road Diet principles, early local opposition to the geometric realignment project is being replaced with optimism as residents notice that traffic is moving more freely. Traffic signal modifications have also lengthen cycle times and promoted better traffic flow.

While the test study has no set deadline, local officials anticipate making a final decision in the spring of 2016.

F&V has been assisting the Multi-Modal Transportation Board and City Commission throughout this road diet planning and test study.
