ADA Accessible Boardwalk

City of Burton
Burton, MI

Project Overview

Kelly Lake Park is a wonderful place for family relaxation, the enjoyment of nature and is a key facility to host special events. The park, however, was in need of improvements to meet the public’s desire for additional walking, fishing, and wildlife viewing opportunities at this beloved and ever popular community park. With assistance from F&V, the City of Burton received a Michigan Department of Natural Resources MDNR Trust Fund (MDNR-TF) Grant to begin improvements that would provide a connecting pathway loop around the lake and wetland while improving access for fishing.

F&V provided design and construction engineering services for a 375 foot ADA accessible and universal access boardwalk. The wooden boardwalk structure is designed with an overlook/pier on the lake side and intermitted lowered handrails for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages and abilities. F&V also assisted with the permit application for a joint EGLE permit to place the boardwalk’s timber piles within the lake and wetland. Site design utilized low impact and best management practices of local and state agencies. Other improvements included placement of an HMA pathway from the parking lot to the boardwalk.

The addition of the boardwalk sparked a flurry of activity at the park, with dozens excited to try out the new fishing pier and walkway amongst the natural wetlands. City Officials have noted that the addition has helped further bring the community together.
