Corridor Study and Improvements

City of Kentwood
Kentwood, MI

Project Overview

Wing Avenue (between 52nd Street and 60th Street) is a unique corridor in the City of Kentwood, retaining much of its rural character, historic homes, and mature trees. However, the roadway deteriorated to the point that maintenance alone was no longer effective.

In 2016, F&V assisted the City with a corridor study to solicit public input, evaluate options for various design elements, and provide guidance for the design of the corridor improvements, which included:

  • Gathering input from the Wing Avenue residents and wider community through an online portal and a series of public meetings and workshop.
  • Evaluating options for the roadway, non-motorized facilities and utilities and their impact on cost, tree preservation, rural character and other areas.
  • Performing a traffic study to evaluate signalization of the intersections in the area, corridor speeds, lane requirements for Wing Avenue, and other traffic impacts.

Since F&V was already familiar with the project, the City of Kentwood selected F&V to provide design and construction engineering services for the needed improvements, which included the following:

  • Reconstruction of the roadway with two 11-foot lanes striped at 10 feet and detailed concrete curb and gutter to limit the road footprint and resulting disturbance of the corridor, while improving safety and function.
  • Construction of watermain on Wing Avenue and Paris Park Drive, with approximately 7,000 feet with an emergency interconnect to the Byron Gaines Utility Authority main on 60th Street and connectiontion to the Grand Rapids system at 52nd Street.
  • Installation of underground storm sewer and replace existing cross culverts, while limiting the impact on the adjacent wetlands.
  • Construction of sanitary sewer on Wing Avenue, with approximately 4,000 feet of connections to 52nd Street and Paris Park Drive.
  • Construction of designated left and right turn lanes for northbound traffic on Wing Avenue at 52nd Street to improve peak hour level of service.
  • Replacement of sidewalk ramps to the extent necessary to meet current MDOT and ADA guidelines and restore the Paul Henry Trail along the west side of Wing north of 60th Street.
