Sun Chemical was an ink-making company that closed its Kalamazoo-based operations in the 2000s. After years of sitting vacant, Kalamazoo County found the parcel in its hands and decided to erase the eyesore from the community.
The County, working in coordination with the City of Kalamazoo, hired F&V to conduct hazardous materials assessments, prepare biddable specifications for asbestos abatement and demolition, Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) and Underground Storage Tank (UST) closures and provide observation and documentation during demolition activities. Two production water wells were discovered during demolition activities and the wells were plugged and abandoned in accordance with State regulations.
The County is actively listing this site as a Brownfield Redevelopment Site, looking for a dynamic reuse to bring value, and possible new tax base and jobs, out of this former abandoned site.
