Press Release: F&V Adds Michigan Water Expert to Environmental Group

Fleis & VandenBrink (F&V) announced today the hiring of Kelly S. Hon as a senior project manager for the Environmental Services Group.

Hon, who has nearly two decades of experience leading and guiding drinking water protection initiatives for local units of government throughout the state, will oversee F&V’s Source Water Protection (SWP) staff.

“Kelly is a great addition to our staff,” said Brian L. Rice, F&V Principal and Environmental Services Group Manager. “She is well known and recognized as a Source Water expert by municipal water suppliers and regulators throughout the state and Midwest.”

Hon spent the past 16½ years with the Michigan Rural Water Association (MRWA) assisting communities in the development and implementation of Source Water Protection Program Plans. Her work included reviewing delineation reports, determining contaminant source susceptibility, developing emergency response plans, planning of future water supplies, reviewing of ordinances, site plan reviews and master plans. She also has considerable experience in designing successful public education programs.

“It is exciting to be a part of the F&V team where I’ll have more resources and support for clients,” said Hon, who also administered the Michigan Wellhead Protection Program at the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (now Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) prior to her work at MRWA. “I’m also looking forward to taking a broader look at things, especially in environmental policy.”

Over the years, Hon has worked closely with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and EGLE to ensure local compliance with regulatory issues. She has worked with the state to provide guidance and determine the direction of the Michigan Source Water Protection Program.  She has been a regular contributor of articles and presentations related to drinking water. She has also served on various drinking water related committees and is a past recipient of the Michigan Water Environment Association’s Groundwater Management Professional of the Year.

“Kelly is a very detailed-oriented person and her background in setting up and facilitating meetings, dividing and delegating roles and responsibilities and working to engage and invigorate team members will be a big plus for our clients,” said Rice, who has worked with Hon on previous projects and presentations.

Hon has written and administered grants for municipalities, Environmental Assessments and Notices of Intent. She has also worked closely with Rice and other F&V environmental staff.

“I have always respected and appreciated the work F&V has done,” Hon said. “Oftentimes when more in-depth studies were completed, I’d work with Brian to get that message out to communities. I have always valued and admired his work.”

F&V is an employee-owned multi-disciplined civil engineering and architecture firm and a one-stop shop for infrastructure planning, design and construction. It is headquartered in Grand Rapids but has eight other F&V offices and 230 employees throughout Michigan and Indiana.
