GETTING RID OF GRIDLOCK
Traffic in the rural village of Mattawan was queueing up, causing delays and mounting frustrations. The small-town charm had a big-city traffic issue that Village officials thought was a malfunctioning signal that could cost thousands to fix.
The village hired F&V to perform a traffic impact study (TIS) that reviewed traffic patterns and counts. The Village’s unique school system, which has all facilities on one campus site, was found to be the gridlock cause as everyone was leaving the school buildings at the same time.
School officials staggered the release times, saving the Village additional costs. Now students and village residents hit the road with more flow and less congestion.
Village officials also used the experience to think about their vision for Mattawan and focus on what future developments could impact its traffic.
