Park Improvements – Phase 1

City of Big Rapids
Big Rapids, MI

Project Overview

City officials, with a major fundraising effort by a citizens group, wanted to refresh and enhance recreational opportunities at Hemlock Park. The citizens group raised more than $850,000 for the improvements. Phase 1 improvements include refurbishing existing tennis courts and construction of basketball and pickleball courts and a barrier-free kayak launch.

Phase 2, planned for construction in 2023, will feature a multi-age splash pad.

F&V initially provided topographic survey, permitting and design engineering services for the improvements project north and south of Mitchell Creek on City and Big Rapids Public School District property. FVC also partnered with the City to manage and oversee construction.

The improvements, when completed, will enhance the quality of life in the heart of the City by providing accessible recreational facilities for all users. It will also provide elementary students with access to a full-sized basketball court with six baskets. Business leaders also anticipate the improvements will draw more visitors to the downtown district which is just a block away from the park.
