Parking Facility Improvements
Project Overview
One of the Michigan’s top beaches was losing some of its 500 parking spots and its appeal to recreational users. Deteriorating pavement and potholes at Oval Beach’s turnaround was also slowing entry and exit for recreational vehicles.
F&V provided design engineering and construction services for improvements to the beach’s parking facility. We obtained Joint Permit/ Critical Dunes Permit from the EGLE and worked with Allegan County Soil Conservation District officials to remove trees and relocate dune grass.
Improvements to the parking facility included:
- Crushing, shaping and repaving the existing asphalt surface.
- Expanding the park entrance turnaround.
- Increasing the parking space capacity by 1.4% (or 7 spaces).
Part of the cost-savings was in the repaving process where the rubblization technique was used. Contractors pulverized some of the existing concrete into rubble and used it as new base material rather than hauling it to another location.
The project was completed in a timely manner and 9 percent under budget. And it re-opened to vehicular traffic in time for the Memorial Day weekend in 2016 with much better access.
