Campus Brownfield Grant Administration

City of Kalamazoo
Kalamazoo, MI

Project Overview

A community college and a healthcare system partnered to create a $40-million Healthy Living Campus in downtown Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo construction project focused on wellness and food sustainability. The three-building campus, which includes the Culinary/Allied Health Building, Food Innovation Building and a Mental Health Services Clinic also backs up to the Portage Creek. The creek flowed with pollutants from the former papermaking activities upstream, requiring an environmental clean-up. The City of Kalamazoo received a $1-million Brownfield Redevelopment Grant from EGLE to assist with the clean-up.

The City hired Fleis & VandenBrink to administer the brownfield grant funds and make sure funds were used for eligible activities during the brownfield cleanup. We reviewed project plans, conducted site inspections and served as a liaison between the City, Kalamazoo Valley Community College, Bronson Healthcare, contractors and EGLE.

The major Brownfield redevelopment transformed a blighted area of Kalamazoo into a Healthy Living Campus. The campus not only brought educational opportunities to the core of downtown, the community showcase served as a catalyst for growth and development.
