College Water Supply Improvements
Project Overview
West Shore Community College had problems with its water supply provided by onsite wells. A water feasibility study recommended that the college tap into the City of Ludington’s water system and main transmission supplying the neighboring City of Scottsville. The existing main was four miles south of the college.
The college tapped into the existing 20-inch main and ran a 12-inch water transmission line to the campus. The project also included construction of an elevated 170-foot, 50,000-gallon water tank, water booster station upgrades including a new pump motor with a variable frequency drive (VFD), an automated water flushing device, new meter, RPZ valve, and SCADA improvements to integrate the new system into the City of Ludington’s system.
F&V provided surveying, design engineering, and construction administration of the entire project, including modeling the impacts on Scottville’s and Ludington water systems. F&V also prepared the feasibility study.
The new watermain not only serves the current needs of the 360-acre campus in Mason County, it also provides the college and developers in neighboring Amber and Victory townships an opportunity for future growth.
The project was awarded was awarded an Engineering Merit Award from the ACEC 2021 Engineering & Surveying Excellence Awards.
