Project Summary

The City of Mackinac Island had an undersized wastewater treatment facility (WWTP) that also experienced fluctuations in flows throughout the year. F&V completed an evaluation of the island’s existing wastewater treatment facilities identifying needs and prioritized improvements. A survey of the WWTP building was required to complete designs and plans for improvements to increase wastewater treatment plant capacity.

F&V’s survey team utilized every item in its toolbox to reduce surveying time, save field work hours and costs, and provide more accurate data. LiDAR scanning was a game-changer surveying the Control Building’s existing piping and equipment which was difficult to access. The lightweight laser scanner made it easy for our survey team to carry – especially with no car access on the island.

The 3D laser scanning software eliminated errors in as-builts, saving time and costs from having staff going back to the site and remeasuring all the pipes, bends, and connections by hand. As a result of the survey, F&V was able to complete a master plan in early 2022 recommending the Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) alternative improvement.
